Star Wars World: 5-Day Tunisia Tour
Five days across the southern sets that became Tatooine — Matmata, Ksar Ouled Soltane, Chott el Jerid and the dunes at Ong Jemel.
Star Wars World: 5-Day Tunisia Tour Details
Tunisia has stood in for Tatooine since 1976, and much of what was built here is still standing in the desert.
You sleep at Sidi Driss in Matmata, the underground troglodyte hotel that served as the Lars homestead interior, and walk the vaulted granary courtyards of Ksar Ouled Soltane and Ksar Hadada. Out on the salt flats of Chott el Jerid the exterior sets sit alone in the glare, and beyond Tozeur the Mos Espa set survives in the dunes at Ong Jemel.
Between the film locations is the south itself: Berber hill villages, palm oases at Tozeur and Nefta, and the long empty roads that made the region look like another planet in the first place.
Guided by an archaeologist, so the ksour are explained as the granaries and fortified villages they actually are, not only as backdrops.
