Tunisia's eastern coast strings together fortified medinas, harbours and beaches within easy reach of one another.

Sousse opens the day with its UNESCO-listed medina, the ribat and the great mosque built when this was a frontier of the Islamic world. Monastir follows, where the ribat's walls rise straight out of the sea and the view from the tower runs the length of the coastline.

Hammamet closes it — a walled old town above the water, citrus gardens, and a beach that has drawn travellers since the 1920s.
