El Jem's amphitheatre is the third largest in the Roman world and stands almost complete — you can walk the arena floor and the tiers, and go down into the chambers beneath. It rises straight out of a small modern town, which only makes the scale stranger.
Kairouan is the oldest Islamic city in North Africa and long one of its great centres of learning. The Great Mosque's courtyard, the Aghlabid basins and the carpet workshops of the medina fill the afternoon.
